And
the players rejoice!
Over two years ago we started a poker league in
Atlanta that held no limit holdem tournaments at
sports bars and restaurants. Our idea was simple,
put on a high quality 'Vegas like' poker tournament
and keep track of points over the course of a season
and players would come out to play.
We would sell our service to local sports bars and
restaurants the same way a trivia or karoke company
does, bringing in a crowd of people who wouldn't
be in the establishment otherwise. The concept worked,
proved by the fact that the poker league we started
is still thriving today. Not to mention the huge
success of organized poker leagues all over the
country.
This isn't to say that it has always been easy and
smooth sailing. It has been far, far from it. We've
learned quite a few things along the way, and one
of the things we learned was that we needed a better
way to keep track of points. Using
excel sucked.
We needed a database driven solution that was easy
to use and that displayed an easy to read, dynamic
leaderboard and that was flexible enough to use
a myriad of scoring systems and point distrubution
models.
We know Excel spreadsheets can do the job, this
is completely true.
We kept track of points in excel spread sheets for
nearly two years, although we were looking for a
solution much sooner.
Using excel to keep track of and display our leaderboards
was slightly better than writing results down on
note paper, taking a picture and uploading the the
picture to the web as far as ease of use and management.
Excel was simply a a time consuming, tedious, and
painful task to keep track of points. Especially
when you are keeping track of points for multiple
tournaments each and every week.
There had to be a better way to keep track of our
poker league points and we had to figure it out
fast. So we started searching the web looking for
a poker league leaderboard, a league tally system,
some sort of score board, league scoring system,
you name it we googled it.
We kept coming up pretty dry. There simply wasn't
anything on the market that suited our needs.
We needed a points tally system that accepted
our scoring system and that was
flexible enough to be able to ould accept
many different scoring systems
and schemes.
It needed to display an individual score board for
each each venue and also tally a combined leaderboard
that points across all venues.
We have indivual venue points races as well as a
combined championship tournament. One way to qualify
for the combined championship is by scoring in top
tier of overall players.
We needed a solution that let us put tournament
results into an easy to use form and hit a button.
Once that button was hit, the information is added
to the database and a leaderboard is dynamically
generated with the updated information.
The league setup needed to be efficient and easy
to manage and the individual tournament results
needed to be easy to manipulate.
We also wanted the abilitiy to give permission to
certain users to access the administration section
and update points themselves.
A system that could easily fix points errors, player
name mispellings, and easy to update and modify.
It also needed to be able to handle adding new venues
as well as new seasons and multiple seasons running
at the same time.
Well... after a few months of looking and researching
we realized it simply didn't exist.
We found a few sites that claimed to offer a functioning
poker league software, but with a little bit of
close inspection we quickly realized that it didn't
come close to meeting our needs.
So, we decided to make it ourselves.
We partnered with one of our poker league players
who is a guru at writing object oriented programs
in the latest software utilizing the cutting edge
.NETt technology to create a fully functioning poker
league management software.
The idea we developed in our new partnership was
a poker league management system that we could offer
to other poker leagues around the country and even
around the world.
We knew that we needed the service, and knew others
would as well. So after a lot of hard work development
and testing we are proud to announce our latest
tool to make running your poker league easy.
Visit Poker
League Software to learn more . The Atlanta
Poker Club uses a dynamic scoring system that awards
a total number of points to each tournament based
on how many players play. The league results are
managed by the Poker
League Points Manager.
Dynamic Scoring - More players,
more points. The more players that play in an
event determine how many points the event is worth.
If you beat larger fields you win more points
than winning smaller fields.
It leads to a very competitive points race both
at the venue level as well as the overall level.
Visit the APC
Leaderboard to see the current standings.
You can select each individual venue for their
private points races as well as look at 'all venues'
for an overall league score for the current seasons.
Past seasons are also availble for browsing.
Points are awarded to all final table finishers
and to the final 2 tables if there are 30 or more
players at your event.
The forumla for awarding points is: N^(1/2)*200
